Biography

Early Life and Adulthood

"Son, the first lesson of life is that it is hard. It is unfair. However, you are ahead of most. You are a citizen of the Empire. Remember that."
— Reginald Staghorn

Beric was born on the Imperial capital planet of Coruscant, the first son of Reginald Staghorn, an officer of the Imperial Navy, and Yvana Staghorn, a stay-at-home mother. His was a happy childhood, as his family historically inhabited the upper levels of the megapolis, which was largely free of crime or hardship. Beric was a quiet child, who was doted upon by his mother, and wanted for nothing, but he was also held to high standards by his father. Reginald was a no-nonsense man, a loyal Imperial subject, and a successful disciplinarian. On the one had, he instilled values of loyalty and industriousness in his son from a young age, and as such Beric began to be molded into a young patriot, with strong belief in Imperial values. On the other hand, Yvana also left her mark on young Beric, and he grew to be a quiet and pensive teenager. Once Beric was of age, Reginald took him flying for the first time. It was then that Beric learned that he had a natural aptitude for the art of flying, and it became one of his favorite pastimes.

However, tragedy struck the Staghorn family. What was to be the joyful delivery of a second son, immediately turned into the heart-wrenching loss of a beloved mother and wife. Elric Staghorn was born Year 8 Day 33, with Yvana dying shortly afterward. Beric withdrew into himself after the death of his mother, and as a dutiful son, helped raise Elric.

His father threw himself into his work in the Imperial Navy to deal with his own grief, and was frequently away from Coruscant on assignment. With his newfound responsibility Beric postponed applying to the Imperial Academy, instead getting a job at the Imperial Archives. He worked there for several years, and continued to work there even after Elric came of age, almost as in a stupor. Dreams and aspirations were forgotten, and Beric was "content" with the dull life of a common clerk. He knew that his father was disappointed, but Reginald let Beric be, as Reginald knew that there would be a day in which Beric would not be content with mediocrity. That day finally came. As Beric worked to categorize unit dispatches from the Clone Wars, he came across a briefing outlining the results of a battle over the skies of his homeworld. "Engaged the Separatist fleet over Senate district. Heavy casualties and loss of materiel. Inflicted devastating damage to enemy fleet and personnel. Enemy engaged in total retreat from system. Assessment: Decisive victory."

It was in the moment of reading that briefing that something pierced through the cloud of grief and apathy that had so dominated much of Beric's young adult life. He began to once again think of duty to his society, and the benefits he had enjoyed as an subject of the Emperor. It was a drive for service that almost burned within him. He had rediscovered purpose. It was then that he applied to the Imperial Academy, and he received his father's blessing the morning that he shipped out for Prakith.

Imperial Academy

"Fealty, Fidelity, and Service"
— Motto of the Imperial Academy

Beric's time at the Imperial Academy was a formative time for him. It has been so recent that there has not been adequate time or experience to shed light on how his time on Prakith has influenced his life as a servant of the Empire. However, what can be said is that Beric excelled at both his studies, and the more practical components of Imperial Basic Training. It was here that his newfound drive for relevance and meaning found its outlet. After graduating his training officer, ADJ Auberin Jaxson described Beric as "quick, enthusiastic, and a pleasure to work with," and it was with those words of praise that he began his Imperial career.

It was a crushing blow to Beric's pride that he scored only 1.5% below the minimum requirement for graduating with honors, but instead of wallowing in self-pity Beric allowed his disappointment to strengthen his resolve by bringing honor to himself by his actions.

Another surprise was the nature of Beric's assignment. It was his expectation that he would graduate from basic and join the Imperial Navy, and so follow in the footsteps of Reginald as a pilot. However, when it was time to request his branch, TO Jaxson presented Beric with a interesting opportunity. It was then that he was told that Regional Government was in need of dedicated and responsible personnel. Beric took this as a challenge. The son of a true patriot, Beric knew that there were times in which the Empire demands sacrifices of her people, that the desires of the individual were not above the needs of the whole. With that on his mind and in his heart, Beric requested to join the staff of RGOV, and he was promptly assigned to the Ruby Region at the rank of Junior Superintendent.

Personality

If there is one word that best described Beric's personality, that word would be amicable. In general he is a friendly and helpful person, and he wishes to be seen as dedicated and responsible. These qualities have been corroborated by many of his peers and superiors, and so far has earned him both a promotion and a number of recognitions early in his career. Beric has the tendency to completely throw himself into his work, which has made regional government a good fit, as well as a satisfying assignment. After all, the work of government is never truly complete. There is nothing he enjoys more than being out among the people, giving them direction as they literally build the Empire from the ground up, city by city. While the military branches may get the glory, Beric is finally, truly content in knowing that he is doing his small part to exercise the Emperor's will in bring peace and order to the galaxy.
