During my tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the 6th Brigade, I went missing in action and was only found again 5 years later. An unexpected, and totally unacceptable situation. I do not recall the events leading me to the ISB facility : I remember reading scout reports and assignments, then a white impenetrable fog. The next clear and sharp memory is that of the ISB interrogator, and the dull grey glint of the steel infrastructure. There was a long period of examinations, of questions, and I dearly wanted to oblige, but I could not formulate answers. Not even theories, suggestions, conspiracies. I could offer... nothing. Nothing to explain, justify, excuse my disappearance, my failure in the line of duty. Nothing to make sense of the shame that has befallen me. The interrogators were skilled and driven, and conducted the questionning with a practiced and firm hand. There were rough times, to say the least, but I did not blame them, not once. They were doing their job, and deserved a better response than a lame and overused "I don't know". I did encourage their efforts, even praised them once after a particuliar intense session. I clearly remember the face the interrogator did, although I could not say if it was anger, exasperation or amazement.

Eventually, I found balance. I was, am, Ikurei Serper, Captain in the Imperial Army. Or so the ISB claimed, and I never question the word of the ISB. The Galaxy is a dangerous place : nefarious organizations and unsavoury individuals lurk everywhere, hunting for their next victim. I wrote everywhere, I should say almost everywhere. Only the Galactic Empire offers security and stability in this chaotic maelstrom of intentions. I somehow felt prey to these intents, and wish it on no one. This is why I reinlisted : to prevent anyone from being a victim from those who revelled in such dishonorable actions. And perhaps it would also help me. Perhaps not. But I am not afraid, should the worse happen, I would be with the best military force in the Galaxy. And the ISB has my number.

Ikurei Serper was an educated Coruscanti Captain in the Imperial Army who served as the second Brigade Commanding Officer of the 6th Brigade.

Biography

Pre-enlistment life

Family

Tall and well-built with piercing blue eyes, Ikurei was a son of House Serper, a megalomaniac family who pretended to be of noble blood but never managed to prove it, in spite of gigantic efforts over decades. His father Bhereck, an import/export merchant, was only a distant cousin of the current Head of the Family and her mother Elayni a simple librarian, making Ikurei a far remote choice for the next Head of the Family. He had an older brother Teram and sister Jilena (twins) and a younger brother Vlondell.

Occupation and centers of interest

His family was relatively fortunate and as is customary in the Serper House the children did not attend schools but had private teachers. This gave Ikurei a sheltered youth and a strong Imperial indoctrination and no dramatic event occured to change his views. In his early 20ies he tried numerous activities and in the end decided to focus on history, dancing, writing and strategy games.

History

Ikurei has a great interest in history, in particular historical archives and events, the older the better. He likes to search old data and reference history books for past events, comparing sources and versions, looking for anomalies and disagreements, and ultimately for truth. This research and analytical exercise became a serious hobby and he started attending seminars and talks. His research focuses on the battles of the Republic, in particular the less known and treated conflicts between the Republic military and insurrection forces.

Dancing

Introduced to dancing at the age of 16, Ikurei has since that day not stopped dancing, attending courses and workshops regularly and training hard to achieve accuracy and style. He became quite able at couple dancing, in a wide variety of music styles.

Writing

Reading had become an obsession, especially history archives, and naturally writing became a natural activity, from reports to long argumentations. Although he had yet to make his research and findings in history known, lacking the reputation to publish in respected peer-reviewed periodicals, he had found a niche market which did not require him to have any kind of diploma or certification. When he was 6, his sister was gifted a Squall, a small lagomorph native to the planet Chandrila. The furry animal was adorable and her the young Serpers immediately became fond of the pet nicknamed "Great Ears". Unfortunately, the animal died within a month, provoking a drama in the family. His sister devastated, Ikurei swore he would learn everything there was to know about Squalls. It took years but eventually he reached a surprisingly high level of knowledge, and became a known authority in the minor noble circles of Coruscant. At 16 he was asked to write for a very serious holo-book project: "Good care and Love for our companions" and co-authored a chapter on the Squalls. The holo-book became a success. Since then, Ikurei is compiling his knowledge about Squalls and writing a manuscript about Squalls, intending it to be the reference on the topic.

History Investigator

After finishing his education and passing the graduation exams at the age of 20 through the holonet, he had to find a professional occupation. He chose to turn to history, not to become Historian or Academic but more of an investigator, a mix of archeologist, adventurer and historian. Surprisingly the Head of the House opposed a strong refusal, especially as History was House Serper's obsession. Ikurei fought a long time for the permission to candidate for a fund from the Imperial Academy and finally managed to wrestle a compromise: he would train for 5 years with a veteran of the Imperial Army in self defense, survival and piloting and if he proved a brilliant student he would be allowed to candidate and be supported in his research. Thus began his training with Csom.

Csom

Csom was a burly man with scars all across his body and an iron grip. He had a no non-sense attitude that were the trademark of military veterans and tolerated no lack in discipline or attention. Soon, Ikurei came to revere the man and put all his energy and efforts into the training, absorbing the man's teachings and drinking the man's words about the Galactic Empire and the Imperial Army. Stories of comradship, battles and skirmishes, endless drills and trainings, state-of-the-art equipment and weapons of unimaginable power filled the young man's head and blotted out all his other occupation. After 4 years and 2 months of intense training, on his 28th birthday, Csom presented him with a letter of recommendation to join the Imperial Army. It was a revelation to Ikurei and the very day he strode through the nearest recruitment office.

Enlistment life

Intergalactic Holdings Incorporated

On Year 12 Day 125 Ikurei requested and obtained a leave of absence which he used to meet a banker of the Interplanetary Holdings Incorporated on Borlethain, a recent and rich looking bank dedicated to the late Adim Locke, a famous local investor. His rendez_vous with a Falleen named Xunura, to discuss funding his Squall holo-book, turned short when the bank was suddenly attacked by local thugs. Armed, determined and ready to kill, the robbers seized the bank by force, killing the security guards. At that time alone in Xunura's office, Ikurei had been forced to follow the robbers in the main hall.

However the bank went into lockdown and the robbers started to lose their nerves and only their leader, a bald and ugly looking human called "Skulls" kept the robbers in line. A customer, a human called Alex Rin, had escaped the thugs attention and was causing trouble using and Skulls had decided to put an end to it, threatening to kill a hostage, a woman lying down next to Ikurei. Knowing he would be the next hostage taken, Ikurei decided to act decisively and attacked Skulls when he was not looking.

The two men went down and a vicious hand to hand struggle began. In spite of his extensive combat training, Skulls was considerably more experienced and tougher than the Coruscanti but Ikurei had gained a serious advantage by breaking the thugs knee and taking a superior position. Two other thugs in the room, a human and a wookiee ran to Skulls help but before they could reach the two fighting Alex Rin attacked the human thug. In the mean time, Ikurei had successfully used his edge and had began to strangle Skulls when the wookiee reached him. The wookiee grabbed Ikurei and began lifting him, using its inhuman strength. Ikurei had tried a last trick but it had failed to move the wookiee, but all was not lost as Alex Rin had managed to grab the other thug's blaster and had shot the wookiee in the back. Using this instant of respite Ikurei had taken hold of Skulls' blaster and shot multiple times the wookiee in the stomach, continuing strangling Skulls in the mean time. Both Skulls and the wookiee faltered at the same time and went unconscious, on the verge of death.

The last thug chose this instant to enter with a hostage. Unable to shoot the robber, Ikurei took cover but Alex Rin was injured by a blaster shot and went down. Another customer, James Aydan chose this moment to enter the hall behind the robber but his attack was so clumsy he managed to get himself shot in the gut. Ikurei had missed an opportunity to kill the thug, but the hostage decided to break loose and Ikurei seized this second chance and shot down the robber with two precise chest blaster hits, saving the hostage's life.

Moments later the local security police burst into the bank and took care of the hostages. With two hostages saved, three robbers killed Ikurei was duly congratulated by the police for his pivotal role in resolving this crisis.

How I became an Imperial

I have always believed to be an Imperial: born on Coruscant, the heart of the Empire, in a family of loyal and committed Imperials and educated according to the ideals of the New Order, it was only natural to believe myself an Imperial. I found myself to be wrong, birth and basic education does not make one an Imperial.

My pre-enlistment life was a shame in retrospect, unworthy of an Imperial. My upbringing greatly benefited from the efforts of the men and women of the Galactic Empire, while I never did anything in particular for the Empire. Naturally I studied with the utmost serious at school and fulfilled my obligations as an Imperial citizen with devotion, but aside from this bare minimum I could not boast of any additional contribution. The real shame though, was that I did not feel any inconvenience at profiting from the system, I even called myself an Imperial of good standing, and did proudly so. I was fortunate to be given the golden opportunity to understand the depth of my mistake and the chance to remedy to this poor behavior.

It is difficult to pinpoint the moment when I realized the true calling of an Imperial. Perhaps it was during my training sessions with Csom, the former Stormtrooper who had been hired to teach me how to survive in the outer-rim. His credentials had been impressive, his competence undoubted and his training appropriate, but it had been more than that. He had also educated me in the Imperial ideals in a way that no academy teacher had ever matched, with stories of the Imperial Army on the field. Not stories one could read in holo-fictions or news reports, overly dramatic and exaggerated, oh no. They had been straight and blunt tales and it allowed the might of the Imperial Army and the strengths of the structures and organization behind it. Being an Imperial meant being part of this efficient war machine. Although it had been a revelation at the time, I could only see its logical conclusion: joining the Imperial Army.

Perhaps it was during my time in the Imperial Academy, being in contact with representatives of the Empire and joining the Imperial Army after graduating with honours. Although my official entry into the Galactic Empire had been a great moment in my life, I had not contributed much to further the ideals of the New Order, aside from successfully filling a form, allowing me to leave the ranks of recruit and become a First Class Private in the Imperial Army.

Perhaps it was the day His Majesty the former Emperor Vodo Bonias was deposed. At the time I was a great admirer of His Majesty and I used to carry with me dozens of pictures of the Emperor which I liked to offer to Imperial and non-Imperial citizens alike. No matter the reason, the removal of the icon of Imperial culture and strength had been a huge shock. My military unit moving to red alert status was in comparison barely felt. I think it was during the following days that my conception of being an Imperial really matured. Under the leadership and guidance of my chain of command I managed to return to my previous commitment and motivation and find a new meaning to my service than the sole worshipping of one man. Proper respect must be given to the Emperor, this goes without saying. Mindless adoration does not make on an Imperial, the New Order is much more than that.

It is service that grants one the honor and privilege to be called Imperial, thus I believe I became an Imperial by serving the Emperor and the Empire, and as my service improves I become a better Imperial.
