"The Imperial Star Destroyer I is the combination between a carrier, battleship, and troop transport... makes you wonder why there are still people out there who think they can challenge the Galactic Empire and the Imperial Navy."
MFSGT Serena Moon

Imperial Star Destroyers are the standard capital ships of the Imperial Navy and are instantly recognizable symbols of the Emperor's authority and the Galactic Empire's dominance in space.

Overview

The Imperial Star Destroyer I are the mainstay capital ship of the Imperial Navy. As ships have evolved throughout the galaxy one consistency has become more and more prevalent. That factor is the immense size of the current battleships. Over the last generation, warships have become much larger, and far more advanced. The Imperial line of Star Destroyers has become the gold standard by which all other large warships are judged. With eighty turbolaser batteries, and sixty ion batteries, there are few ships who would successfully oppose her. The dagger shaped hull is one design detail that was carried over from earlier generations. The vast experience of the Emperor’s ship design staff has made her one of the best all-around fighting vessel currently in existence.

She currently stands as at the pinnacle of Imperial starship evolution. The Imp-Star boasts the most modern targeting, sensors, armaments, and docking bays in the entire Imperial fleet. The Imperial High Command spared no expense in the creation of this design, and because of that dedication to this particular project the Imperial Star Destroyer maintains its position as a very capable threat. This ship was designed from the ground up to be able to handle almost any situation. Anything from large ship-to-ship battles, ground assaults, planetary siege, blockades, and deep sector patrols, are all on the Imperial Destroyer's rather long list of accomplishments. The Imperial Star Destroyer has brought both peace and prosperity to our galaxy, and its continued reign is expected to continue for many years to come.

The Bridge

Placed on top of the ship in the stern sits the Imperial Star Destroyer's bridge tower. Housing the ships bridge, the advanced sensor array and the two iconic shield domes that renders the ship invincible to any fighter and bomber attack.

The Imperial Star Destroyer I boasts the most advanced bridge in any ship, with crew pits on either side of a central walkway to the bridge viewports. The crew pits hold advanced ship sensors that monitor all major ship functions on the ship, from it's hanger bay inventories to shield strength down to the ionic capacity of the ship. The walkways allow for officers to oversee the crew pits and enable officers to make sure the bridge is operating an optimal levels.

The command bridge tower of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer is massive. The difference between the deck and the ceiling is three to four meters for the command walkways and one and a half meters more for the control pits. The total number of decks on the bridge tower is somewhere between 20 to 30, with the average spacing of 3 meters. At a few areas there are portals that appear at intervals halfway between the main decks. These correspond to inhabited chambers, rooms, or shafts spanning more than one level.

Armaments

The firepower of an Imperial Star Destroyer is something to be both inspiring and feared. Boasting eighty turbolasers to make quick work of enemy capital ships and freighters along with sixty ion batteries to disable any ship for boarding actions coupled an advanced targeting system, none can challenge the Imperial Star Destroyer and fly away in one piece. With the weapons running along it's length, along with the dagger shape design allows for supreme fields of fire that enable the weapons to fire at any threat in any direction.

Main Battery

The ISD possesses a main battery of 12 heavy turbolasers and 4 heavy ion cannon for disabling enemy warships. Those heavy guns are set in twin mounts flanking the tower structure.

Strangely, the designers did not choose to give their turrets superfiring ability from a level position, either by superelevating the after turrets or merely by spacing them out over a longer distance and letting the natural wedge shape provide the ability. Perhaps superelevation proved impossible with the immense recoils involved (official estimates imply yields so great that the momentum of the fired bolts, and the associated recoil, would be comparable to a large asteroid impact), and perhaps spacing the turrets out proved too great a compromise in terms of power distribution.

Secondary Weapons

Numerous smaller guns are mounted around the ship to ward off attacks against lesser ships not capable of being targeted by the main battery. They varied in size; some are designed as point-defense cannon to destroy incoming missiles and starfighters while others engage lesser capital ships.

Axial Turrets

Three triple-gun turrets are mounted on the ridge of the ship, just forward of the lowest, forwardmost, terrace of the dorsal superstructure.

Hangar Defences

Mounted just beyond the forward tip of the attack hangar are two large ventral turbolasers, which sit near the corners of the massive hangar. The primary function of the turbolasers is to defend the vulnerable docking facilities, but can also be used for planetary bombardment.

The attack hangar is guarded by a set of armored doors. TIE fighter service and refueling bays, and TIE launch hangars surrounds the main hangar. TIEs are launched from cycling racks and pilots board from overhead gantries and are released into space as they disengaged from the front position in the racks. Returning fighters land in separate hangars and then are guided by small tractor beams into receiver-carriers. The receivers carry the TIE to a debarkation station where the pilot exits. Once moved through the transfer tunnels to a launch hangar, the fighter can be serviced and refueled in a separate bay. In the hangar the TIEs are cycled through a launch rack and ready for the next launch.

The small forward hangar is for shuttle craft carrying high-ranking officials. The forward hangar is also used as a back-up to the main hangar.

The Hanger Bay

The Imperial Star Destroyer boasts a large hanger bay capacity, capable of carrying up to 30,000 tons of cargo that takes up to 450,000 m³ of space enabling swarms of fighters and bombers to be released from the ship to cover ground operations that can also be launched from the ship threw it's passenger capacity of 3,800.

Engine Units

  • Destroyer Ion Engine (3)
  • Gemon-4 Ion Engine (4)

The Ion drive is a type of engine technology used to propel most starships at sublight velocities. Ion engines are fueled by power cells, liquid chemical reactants, onboard generators, or virtually any other device capable of providing sufficient power. The engine utilizes internal fusion reactions to produce a stream of highly-charged particles that are forced through the engine's exhaust port at nearly the speed of light. Ion engines are sometimes called ion rockets.

Ion engines are known to emit mildly radioactive byproducts, requiring onboard technicians to wear protective gear. Because of this radioactivity, it is common protocol for most ships to utilize repulsorlifts for propulsion during atmospheric flight and reserve the use of the more powerful ion drives for orbital navigation.

The Destroyer-I ion engine is a large-scale model of the ion engine that is manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, for use in the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer.

The Gemon-4 is a capital-scale ion engine manufactured by Cygnus Spaceworks. Four Gemon-4 ion engines are used for emergency or supplementary sublight drives on Imperial-class Star Destroyers.

Power Plant

  • I-a2b Solar Ionization Reactor

The I-a2b solar ionization reactor is a stardrive system developed and produced by Sienar Fleet Systems.

Often described as a "miniature sun", and incorporating one of the largest single hyperspace field generators ever designed, the massive reactor system occupies more than half of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer's interior. The reactor on board Imperial-class vessels is large enough relative to the rest of the ship to protrude with a ventral bulb. It also forces the troop and crew compartments to be located on the upper half of the superstructure.

Hyperdrive

  • Class 2

Sublight propulsion

For sublight propulsion, the Imperial class relied on an array of three primary ion engines produced specifically for the vessels. For emergency situations requiring additional thrust, the ISD can use its four Gemon 4 ion engines.

Systems

  • LeGrange targeting computers
  • S-s3a tachyon detection scanner

A targeting computer (also called a target device) is a device used aboard starships to aid pilots in targeting their weapons. A target is considered vulnerable when it is aligned with the electronic crosshairs of a targeting computer's gun-sights.

The size of these devices depends on the power of the weapon being targeted. Smaller targeting computers are used aboard one-man starfighters while much larger targeting computers are used to help target turbolasers.

Targeting computers generate a digital projection of the battlefield from the pilot's point of view, and locate enemy units with various sensors. Crosshairs determine where the ranged weapons—whether laser cannon bolts or otherwise—will travel, and the targeting computer also highlights an enemy fighter, turret, tank, or other target when it comes in range of the ranged weapons.

Shields

  • Om-Thaim generators (2)

Om-Thaim is a company that creates a wide variety of shield generators for capital ships, including Imperial Star Destroyers. A deflector shield generator is any device used to create a deflector shield, including both particle and ray shielding. Deflector shield generators are produced in a variety of sizes, ranging from small personal projectors to large units used on capital ships. In some cases, the generator can project the shield a great distance and without need for line of sight, by using a focusing dish.

Role

Fighter Compliment

Each ship carries a wing of multiple Imperial TIE fighters, generally of mixed load out of space-superiority fighters, bombers and reconnaissance spacecraft. These fighters usually consisted of TIE/ln and/or TIE/in Interceptor fighters, TIE/sa Bombers, and TIE/sr Starfighters (Scouts). Furthur details are classified.

Ground Assault Capability

Several hundred troops are also stationed aboard along with a prefabricated base for rapid subjugation of rebellious territories. The ships also carry massive war vehicles including the AT-ATs and AT-ST walkers. The Imperial-class Star Destroyer also carries support craft and dropships such as the Y85 Titan Dropship and the Sentinel-class Landing Craft. The ship can also use TIE Fighters and orbital bombardment to support any surface action.
