Appearance
Calagan Drenn is a balding man of average height who looks to be about 50 years old. There's a permanent frown stuck to his face, accompanied by a cold, hard stare, surrendering his facial muscles to a sardonic impression on exceedingly rare occasions. Whether he is in pain, in rage, or in a bad mood is best left unquestioned. A gravelly voice with very punctured inflections only narrates short and abrupt sentences, making him sound more like a piece of industrial equipment than a human.
Personality
Calagan is calculating, reserved and ruthless, fiercly loyal to his superiors and the Empire itself.
Personal History
Birth on Coruscant
Calagan was born on Coruscant shortly before the Proclamation of the Empire in a family of rank and file workers of a Hapan embassy. Though Calagan had no conscious memory of Imperial proclamation, it had split his family asunder, just like the rest of the Galaxy. While his mother, Rosaline, sympathetic to the Rebel cause, has fled to Outer Rim several years later with young Calagan in tow, his father, Pether, had eagerly joined the Imperial army. No trace of Pether has been found since, and it is unclear whether he achieved anything in the Army and, ultimately, whether he's still alive or not. Calagan was too young at the time to remember much of his prior life or his father.
Exiled to the Rim
Rosaline saw limited prominence in the Republican cabal, burning family credits to establish a stable government on a planet of little significance. Young Calagan had enjoyed what little luxuries life on the Rim offered, and even recieved what grudgingly passed for education among Rebel sympathizers. On Rosaline's order, it included training in blasters and guerrilla tactics.
While Rebel propaganda painted Imperial order as inherently totalitarian and corrupt, it was truthful enough in describing it for Calagan to notice how sympathetic he is to the notion of order and stability. Slowly growing to despise the secessionists, he had argued bitterly with Rosaline on numerous occasions, blaming her personally for leaving Coruscant and betraying the regime she was supposed to serve. Meanwhile, he tasted the chaos that was the Rebel movement personally, having to sleep with his blaster under the pillow and firing it several times in his teenage years in self-defense.
Fierce infighting within the administartion of this particular planet left Calagan an orphan at the age of 15, when his mother happened to recieve a parcel of several kilograms of detonite expertly disguised as a caf brewing machine. Now homeless and penniless, he had wandered the streets for a few weeks, until he was spotted by a local prospecting official and offered a stable, if brutal, job in the mines.
Time in the Mines
Employed as a mere physical labourer in a mine, thus practically enslaved to a Duros entrepreneur for three whole decades, his mind boiled with disdain for the false Republican facade outer rim terrorists were hiding behind. What was painted as a fight for "freedom" turned out to be a simple powerplay by wealthy individuals to overthrow the rightful Galactic government and become "free" to leech on the simple folk like him. His eventual promotion to foreman did little to improve the situation, placing dozens of similarly miserable sentients under his responsibility with meager extra pay. Feeling little sympathy to them, Calagan still did his best to keep them alive and paid - a daunting task, considering the average fatality rate in Outer Rim mining.
Perhaps it was his father who arranged him an opportunity to sabotage the mine, or it was by mere coincidence that he happened to enjoy a very interesting conversation with an Imperial loyalist in a saloon one fateful evening. Some of the miners shared his disdain, lending their assistance in Calagan's mutiny. The Duros entrepreneur ended up crushed into bits and melted into slightly questionable metal ingots, and the mine paralyzed from droids going haywire, mining support structures instead of rock. Calagan found himself with enough credits to book indirect passage to Imperial space, an opportunity he never dared to even wish for.
