Karl von Roma was the Deputy Director of the Imperial Office of Criminal Investigations (IOCI), which was formed as an independent investigative agency within the Empire. Roma was involved in a number of investigations, including the investigation of Commanding Officer of the Army, Chiss Veers, who was suspected of leaking intelligence to enemies of the Empire. Despite ongoing efforts, von Roma was unable to secure any solid evidence, and failed to prosecute any of the cases investigated by IOCI.
Quickly becoming known for his arrogance, von Roma came into conflict with several prominent Imperials, including Banquo Knox of the Imperial Security Bureau, and Seele of Imperial Intelligence; the latter of these conflicts led to IOCI losing its independence and being placed under the direct command of Imperial Intelligence. Bitter at the loss of independence he felt he had in IOCI, von Roma's ongoing conflicts resulted in the stalling of his career and careful supervision of his activities.
Resigned after the overthrow of Emperor Charon, von Roma left the Empire where he would later come into contact with the Sith Lord Thraken Solo. Solo discovered von Roma to be Force sensitive, and was ordered to kill von Roma by his master, Darth Knyte. Ultimaely it had been von Roma's continued conflict with the majority of Imperials around him, and his reputation for ignoring key facts that resulted in the Order of the Sith considering him to be too unstable to be trained in the ways of the Force. As a result of this determination, his death was ordered to prevent von Roma from seeking instruction from the more careless force sects, where he could potentially become a violent and chaotic menace.
