Boloball (or "limmie") is a popular sport, coming to prominence in Year 6 when the Imperial Gaming Commission created the Auvasa Imperial League to serve as the elite competition within Imperial territory. Imperial boloball has appeared in various guises since its original format in Year 6, with varying numbers of teams, divisions and additional knockout tournaments. In recent years competitions have expanded to include teams from the wider Imperial Union and friendly states.

The premier boloball competition within the Imperial Union is currently the Imperial Union League.

Eras and Incarnations of Imperial Boloball

Auvasa Imperial League (Year 6 - Year 11)

Prior to Year 11, the Imperial Boloball League was known as the Auvasa Imperial League (AIL). The tournament (which was renamed for sponsorship reasons[1]) was one of the main sports tournaments played on various worlds throughout Imperial Space. A knockout cup often took place alongside the league campaign. Many planets had more than one team, however not all were at the level to compete in the league, which had no second tier. The league was abandoned after the start of the fifth season.

Imperial Boloball League (Year 11 - Year 23)

The Imperial Boloball League (or IBL) was a long-lived competition that set standards for Empire-wide sporting events organised by the Imperial Gaming Commission. Replacing the Auvasa Imperial League, it ran for 22 consecutive campaigns between Year 11 and 19, before being reformed for 8 further seasons between Year 21 and 23. Initially the IBL consisted of the top flight "Superior League" and two further divisions named Sub League A and B, although past its fifth season the league was most often reduced to 2 divisions. As well as the league campaign, all IBL teams competed in the prestigious Emperor's Cup; a knockout tournament where each round was typically played over two legs (home and away). The Galactic Cup, a second, shorter knockout event, was introduced for the twelfth and thirteenth seasons but did not persist.

Union Boloball League (Year 23 - Year 24)

archive-6-UBL-1.png

After the Imperial Boloball League (which had lasted for 30 seasons) had run its course, plans for a Union Boloball League (UBL) to take its place would come too late for clubs across the disbanded league, who lost players and staff to foreign and exhibition leagues as uncertainty saw contracts voided or terminated. The UBL returned top-tier boloball for a single season before itself collapsing to be replaced with the Imperial Union League.

Imperial Union League (Year 24 - Present)

archive-6-IUL-1.png

The current iteration of Imperial Boloball, the Imperial Union League (or IUL) is organised by the Imperial Gaming Commission and coordinated by League Admin Arthur Smith. Since its inaugural campaign, the IUL has been working to open its doors, predominantly expanding its participants and audience into territories sympathetic with the Imperial Union. Much like the Imperial Boloball League, since its second season the Imperial Union League has followed a league and cup format, with teams in any of the league's divisions once again taking part in the Emperor's Cup.

Other Competitions

Emperor's Cup

The Emperor's Cup is the oldest companion tournament to Imperial boloball, making its first appearance during the third season of the Imperial Boloball League and becoming a regular feature thereafter. Emperor's Cup ties are decided over two legs (home and away), although the final has sometimes been a one-leg affair.

Galactic Cup

A second cup competition, the Galactic Cup, was added to the fixture list for IBL seasons 12 and 13. The tournament took place in the early weeks of the season before the Emperor's Cup, with each round decided in one match. The Galactic Cup carried less weight than the more established Emperor's Cup, had a very modest prize fund, and was generally considered a second-tier competition. Shadow Maw beat Imperial All Stars 2-0 to clinch the first Galactic Cup trophy in season 12, also appearing in the final in the following season when Thyferran Hammers won by the same scoreline.

Local Competitions

Whilst boloball has been popularised by the elite competitions such as those held across the Empire and the Imperial Union, boloball has many thriving local and sector leagues. Regional sporting governing bodies host a variety of tournaments, such as the Jaso Boloball League and the Kuat Sector Cup, with the size, quality and sustainability of these competitions dependent on local and cultural appetite for the game. These regional competitions can serve as feeder tournaments for the elite competitions, producing athletes, staff and entire clubs that go on to compete at the pinnacle of the game. Boloball is increasing popular, particularly in the coreward territories of the Emerald and Ruby regions, and the Imperial Boloball Youth Organisation has provided additional funding to educational institutions and grassroots programmes from Year 21[2], citing the positive impact of the sport on young peoples' fitness and social issues.
