Daniel Jax is a Bosph from the planets Bosph. He was born into a prosperous family of merchants, and was piloting small transports when he was six. Things changed for him at the age of seven when a deal went disasterously wrong for his father. The a large sum of funds went missing from company funds, his father was wrongly jailed for fraud and his assets siezed by the Baobob Merchant fleet despite evidence he was not the culprit.
His family, impoverised, had to move to the slums. He found this transition difficult and had many violent altercations with the local youths. He became friendly with "old man Visser", a human Empire sympathiser who lived in poverty in the slums and was evangelical in his politics. Visser explained the Empire's doctrines, and their vision to "struggle to bring peace and order to all, to bring enlightenment to those that remain unenlightened". Daniel was convinced, and decided he should join the empire. This conviction was hardeded when Baobob inspired lynch mob murdered Visser.
Daniel was initially refused permission to leave the planet, but he got a lucky break when he won a leaving lottery granting him permission to leave. He boarded a freighter bound for Emire space and joined the Academy early in Year 17.
