Amne Zailyn is currently serving as a Master Sergeant in the Imperial Army.

Biography

Amne Zailyn was born in Year -12 to Lydia Zailyn, a manager at a ship building company, and Rohlan Dermot, a Hapan smuggler who would pick up goods smuggled into Lorell - the only Hapan planet that allowed the presence of foreigners - and bring them to the other planets of the Hapes Cluster.

Raised by her mother and visited by her father, Amne had a happy childhood on Lorell. She was close to her mother's best friend, who was like a second mother to her. Although she attended school with students of various species and genders, Amne maintained an unconscious prejudice against non-humans and, slightly less so, against men; she saw them as inferior, though not deserving of unfair treatment. When Amne was twelve, Lydia adopted a young girl named Cecily Rowe.

At the age of seventeen, Amne started studying at a distinguished university on Hapes, wishing to enter the Civil Service. There, she became acquainted with Dianthe, the eldest daughter of Karina, a power-hungry Turil'din. Soon after their graduation in Year 9, Amne and Dianthe were engaged to be married.

A few months later, an assassination attempt intended to take Amne's life instead claimed Dianthe's. Amne was confident that the attempt had been ordered by Karina, determined to eliminate her daughter's fiancée so that Dianthe would marry the heir of a wealthy Ducha. Amne convinced her mother of the need to protect themselves; the Zailyns fled to Coruscant and were welcomed into the homes of Lydia's clandestine friends, including Amne's father. This uprooting of their lives caused a rift between the sisters; Cecily, at the cusp of thirteen, at times failed to repress her growing resentment toward Amne for her severance from her friends and home.

Amne lamented there for some time, brokenhearted and unsure of what to do with her life. She was offered a job as a crewmember for a successful smuggling organization, but she declined after she witnessed Imperial stormtroopers entering a tapcaf in order to apprehend a fleeing criminal. Impressed with their efficiency, and deciding that it was worth devoting her life to serving and protecting than to languishing, Amne enlisted in the Imperial Army. She attended the Imperial Academy, graduating with honors and gaining her Imperial citizenship (and, in turn, sponsoring citizenships for Lydia and Cecily). Immediately starting her first tour of service, Amne found herself as part of a minority of women in the military. Being surrounded by men, working with them as her peers and commanders, had a profound effect on Amne. She devoted herself to her work, integrating well into her legion and befriending other soldiers.

After several months, Amne - now Master Sergeant Zailyn - was permitted a brief sabbatical. She spent the weekend on Corellia at the apartment of a male acquaintance in Carthage. At the end of her sabbatical, instead of being ordered back to the Army base, Amne was immediately sent to a mission briefing in Coronet.^[1] Chief Daelis Stanov of Imperial Intelligence would be posing as a wealthy businessman offering to sell Imperial supplies to Dax Goreline, a warlord of Garos, while Amne, retired Army Captain Euna Miriel, Crewman Lilith Sarka and computer specialist Thalia Brando made up his entourage. Amne and Miriel's assignment entailed protecting Brando while she extracted data from Goreline's casino's mainframe computer.^[1]

Amne declined invitations to the Imperial Ball - hosted on Year 12 Day 39 - from Dante Erinith and Lane Rendell in order to attend with Miriel. She did later accept a friendly invitation to go out for drinks with Rendell in honor of her twenty-fourth birthday.^[2]

Although his career did not allow him to be a steady presence in his daughter's life, Dermot maintained a relationship with Amne. As she grew older, he taught her things that "she would never learn in school" but that he deemed "necessary to round out her education," as he later explained to Lydia when she found out. These skills included stealth, thievery and rudimentary slicing and ship mechanics. Dermot later offered his apartment to the Zailyns when they fled from the Hapes Cluster.^[2]

Amne knew that Dianthe, as the eldest daughter of a conservative noble family, was expected to marry well and bear heiresses. Even though Amne was willing to live as mistress, Dianthe was determined to have Amne as no less than her wife and mother of her children. (Dianthe, as the titled wife, would have had to bear their children in order for them to be considered legitimate heiresses.)
