Biography
Amne Zailyn was born in Year -12 to Lydia Zailyn, a manager at a ship building company, and Rohlan Dermot, a Hapan smuggler who would pick up goods smuggled into Lorell - the only Hapan planet that allowed the presence of foreigners - and bring them to the other planets of the Hapes Cluster. Raised by her mother and visited by her father, Amne had a happy childhood on Lorell. She was close to her mother's best friend, Kenna Nikoris, who was like a second mother to her. After Kenna died from cancer in Year 0, Lydia adopted her three-year-old daughter Cecily. Throughout her years of schooling, despite having classmates of various species, Amne adopted the societal prejudice against non-humans and, less so, against men.
Amne and Dianthe, before their engagement |
At the age of seventeen, Amne started studying at a distinguished university on Hapes, wishing to enter the Civil Service. There, she became acquainted with the free-spirited Dianthe Tal'e. Just friends for the first year, as Dianthe casually dated and Amne was slow to recognize their mutual attraction, they gradually fell in love. Dianthe had a strong influence on Amne from the beginning: challenging her misandry and anti-alien biases, helping her realize her attraction to women, and introducing her to the galaxy outside her middle-class Hapan world. Soon after their graduation in Year 9, Amne and Dianthe were engaged to be married.
Although Amne knew that Dianthe was the eldest daughter of the Turil'din Isola Kuat, she had been unaware until after their engagement that Dianthe had long been betrothed to the only son of a wealthy Duch'da - her mother's cousin - via an arrangement that Dianthe refused to acknowledge or honor. Isola had consented to send Dianthe to university in hopes that her daughter would experiment and then return home, ready to be mature and settle down. Even though Amne was willing to live as mistress as she continued in her career in the Civil Service, Dianthe was determined to have Amne as no less than her wife and mother of her children. (Dianthe, as the titled wife, would have had to bear their children in order for them to be considered legitimate heiresses.) Realizing that her daughter would not back down, Isola decided to "solve the problem" by eliminating Amne. The murder attempt, however, went awry and claimed Dianthe's life. Amne fled to Coruscant along with her mother and sister, welcomed to stay at her father's apartment. This uprooting of their lives caused a rift between the sisters; Cecily, at the cusp of thirteen, at times failed to repress her growing resentment toward Amne for her severance from her friends and home.
Amne lamented there for some time, brokenhearted and unsure of what to do with her life. She was offered a job as a crewmember for Dermot's successful smuggling organization. Around this time, Amne had an intense fling with Vianna, a violet-haired Zeltron slicer in her father's employ. Amne later witnessed Imperial stormtroopers entering a tapcaf in order to apprehend a fleeing criminal. Impressed with their efficiency, and much to Dermot's chagrin, Amne enlisted in the Imperial Army. She attended the Imperial Academy, graduating with honors and gaining her Imperial citizenship (and, in turn, sponsoring citizenships for her mother and sister). Immediately starting her first tour of service, Amne found herself as part of a minority of women in the military. She devoted herself to her work, integrating well into her legion and befriending the other soldiers in her brigade.
After several months, Amne - now Master Sergeant Zailyn - was permitted a brief sabbatical. She spent the weekend on Corellia at the apartment of a male acquaintance in Carthage. At the end of her sabbatical, instead of being ordered back to the Army base, Amne was immediately sent to a mission briefing in Coronet. Chief Daelis Stanov of Imperial Intelligence would be posing as a wealthy businessman offering to sell Imperial supplies to Dax Goreline, a warlord of Garos, while Amne, retired Army Captain Euna Miriel, Crewman Lilith Sarka and computer specialist Thalia Brando made up his entourage. Amne and Miriel's assignment entailed protecting Brando while she extracted data from Goreline's casino's mainframe computer.[1]
Amne declined invitations to the Imperial Ball, hosted on Year 12 Day 39, from Dante Erinith and Lane Rendell in order to attend with Miriel. She did later go out for drinks with Rendell. While they were both on leave, Amne invited herself along with Rendell to reclaim his space station from pirates. The adventure cemented their friendship.

"It's so cute when men think they're significant." - — Draelor Nah`utal and Amne Zailyn
Amne was fond of spiced Hapan ale; the smell and taste made her feel like she was back on Lorell. Amne found it difficult to trust Kuati, suspecting that they may be spying for Isola Kuat. Amne suffers from aviophobia; when she's not the pilot, Amne has been known to become nauseous and even pass out during space battles, particularly from advanced maneuvers. She takes Imperial Medical Corps-prescribed drugs to avoid these side effects while traveling for Army assignments. She has often used "Amne Dermot" as an alias, especially when she expects the use of the name to get back to her father.
Relationships
Friendships
Family
Although his career did not allow him to be a steady presence in his daughter's life, Dermot maintained a relationship with Amne. As she grew older, he taught her things that "she would never learn in school" but that he deemed "necessary to round out her education," as he later explained to Lydia when she found out. These skills included stealth, thievery and rudimentary slicing and ship mechanics. Dermot later offered his apartment to the Zailyns when they fled from the Hapes Cluster.
Romance
- "I just have elegant taste."
- — Amne Zailyn
Despite her middle-class upbringing and decidedly "tainted" blood as the daughter of a smuggler, Amne's committed relationships were with wealthy aristocrats, namely Dianthe Tal'e and Euna Miriel. Even though Amne typically dated human women, she was also attracted to men and, rarely, non-humans. Amne had a brief but intense liaison with Vianna, a Zeltron slicer. After hearing Sarka express the opinions that non-humans are not sapient and "an alien who can fly a ship or shoot a blaster is like a dog you've taught to open the fridge," Amne mused that one of the greatest nights she'd ever had was with a Bothan, who "certainly didn't need to be taught any tricks." Sarka categorically ignored Amne, assuming that the latter was just messing with her in order to derail the rant. Later, Amne privately revealed that she had been quoting Vianna after the latter's "Bothan encounter" but had been so amused by the reactions of others that she let the rumors run rampant.
