Biography
Early life, education, and military service
Amne Thian Zailyn was the daughter of the smuggler Lydia Zailyn. Unbeknownst to Amne, her father is a nobleman, Rohlan Dermot, who had become fascinated by Turila Astero, Lydia's disguise whenever she visited his home to conceal his mother's connection to smugglers. Rohlan had long been betrothed to Ducha Nikoris, who he had yet to meet, and they were married not long after Amne was conceived. Lydia raised Amne on her ship, the Bën Riore, although she would leave her daughter with trusted friends before embarking on a particularly dangerous assignment. Lydia married Ezri Katriel, an Arxianic mercenary formally attached to the smuggling vessel L'Spëyr, when Amne was six. Amne considered the members of Lydia's smuggling organization to be part of her extended family, and she was in many ways a daughter to them all. Amne was taught how to watch and listen, move quickly and quietly, defend herself armed or unarmed, pilot and fix ships, and both slice into and protect important files.
Dianthe Tal'e, Amne's first love |
However, Amne was scholarly by nature and not much interested in pursuing her mother's line of work. Jeric, the elderly cook on the Bën Riore, used to slip her sweets as he told her fantastic bedtime stories of politics and intrigue. These stories later informed her interest in her partial namesake, Thian Tini'duran, who was one of the most beloved Queen Mothers in Hapan history. The Queen Mother's decisions to treat her consort as her equal and to establish the feudal nobility system in order to link proper governance with family status and honor influenced many of Amne's early views on politics. Wishing to become part of the Hapan Civil Service, in order to help the government that so intrigued her, Amne convinced her mother to allow her to attend a distinguished university on Hapes.
Amne befriended Dianthe Tal'e of Phelope, the second daughter of Seth Tal'e and Isola Kuat. Dukana Tal'e had consented to send Dianthe to university in hopes that she would experiment and then return home ready to be married to her cousin Artor, the only son and heir of a wealthy Ducha. Dianthe, however, had no interest in marrying Artor and refused to even acknowledge her betrothal to him. Amne and Dianthe fell in love, idealistic about their future together.[1] Dianthe came to accept her betrothal to Artor, and Amne remained Dianthe's lover after her marriage.
Amne enlisted in the Royal Hapan Navy, as military experience was required for civil servants. She was able to utilize her smuggling skills in creative ways during her basic training. She regularly corresponded with Dianthe, who was experiencing her first pregnancy. Amne was able to be present when Dianthe gave birth to Sidonie, who Amne considered to be as her own child. Amne kept pictures of them with her when she was away; they were especially comforting when she was sent on a lengthy assignment to Deep Core to assist the newly-merged Galactic Empire. Here, she became friends with the enlisted of the Imperial Navy, such as Ninian DeLayn and Alexander Kuhn. Amne was heartbroken to learn that Dianthe and Sidonie had been assassinated by a noble family who wished for their daughter to marry Artor and become the Ducha. Amne became disillusioned with politics and stories, and perhaps even life. Instead of entering the Civil Service when she was discharged from the Hapan military, Amne left the Hapes Cluster and traveled around the Imperial sectors. When her money started to dwindle, she enrolled in the Imperial Academy.
Becoming an Imperial
Amne threw herself into her studies, much as she had done in university, and did not often speak of her life before the Academy. Amne befriended Nalani Connell, a graduating Zeltron student who was determined to prove herself worthy of Imperial service. Nalani was the daughter of pleasure-slaves who had been emancipated by Imperial law, and she held little regard for the corrupted Galactic Republic of old. She had cultivated a frosty demeanor to remain focused on her duties and ward off any students who expected her to be as sexually available as they'd heard Zeltrons were. Nalani particularly avoided flyboys who were headed for the Navy, and her experiences influenced Amne's decision to enter the Army rather than the Navy. They remained friends even after Nalani graduated. Amne sought out friendships with other women in the Academy, and she became friendly with several other students. Amne graduated near the top of her class at the rank of Corporal, and she drifted away from these friends as they were placed in different units. When Amne was promoted to Master Sergeant, she was granted Imperial citizenship and continued serving in the Army.
Amne's relationship with Euna Miriel was forged during their Imperial Intelligence mission |
- "I presume ignorance, inexperience and trigger nerves blend about as well as Wookiees and baths. With Amne's reflexes that poor thing never had a chance."
- — Graeda L'Annan[1]
After several months, Amne was permitted a brief sabbatical. She spent the weekend on Corellia at an apartment in Carthage. At the end of her sabbatical, instead of being ordered back to the Army base, Amne was immediately sent to a mission briefing in Coronet. Chief Daelis Stanov of Imperial Intelligence would be posing as a wealthy businessman offering to sell Imperial supplies to Dax Goreline, a warlord of Garos, while Amne, Euna Miriel, Lilith Sarka and computer specialist Thalia Brando made up his entourage. Amne and Miriel's assignment entailed protecting Brando as she extracted data from Goreline's casino's mainframe computer. Amne was surprised that she had been chosen for an Intelligence mission, given that she had only recently become an Imperial citizen. Onboard the Mendoza, Sarka foolishly pulled a blaster on Graeda L'Annan, not recognizing the Army Commanding Officer and believing her to be a threat. Amne disarmed the Kiffar crewman and knocked her unconscious within seconds. Amne blushed "like a star-struck schoolgirl" when L'Annan commended her quick actions as she idolized the Lord General. As per orders Amne arranged for guards to briefly detain Crewman Sarka before returning her to her fleet, although Amne wished that Sarka had been subject to a courtmartial for her actions.[1] Her contributions to the mission's success earned her a promotion to Command Sergeant.
Amne declined invitations to the Imperial Ball, hosted on Year 12 Day 39, from Dante Erinith and Lane Rendell in order to attend with Miriel.[2] Amne ran into Rendell on Bothawui while on leave for her twenty-fifth birthday. They went out for drinks and Amne later invited herself along with Rendell to reclaim his space station from pirates.[3] After hearing Lilith Sarka say that non-humans were not sapient and that "an alien who can fly a ship or shoot a blaster is like a dog you've taught to open the fridge," Amne mused that one of the greatest nights she'd ever had was with a Bothan who "certainly didn't need to be taught any tricks." Rumors ran rampant throughout the barracks, much to Amne's amusement. Much later, she revealed in confidence to Zhaff Orikan and Kalisa Danao that it hadn't happened to her, but to a friend. During the second half of Year 13, Amne accepted Kalisa's invitation to a small gathering at Orikan's home on the Corellian lake Chirq Eharl. When Kalisa later asked Amne to dance, revealing her romantic intentions, Amne gently informed her that she was in love with Euna Miriel, then her girlfriend of nearly two years. Kalisa drank rather heavily out of embarrassment of her rejected advances, but resolved to continue pursuing Amne.[2]
Personality
As a child, Amne was enthralled by Hapani songs and stories of romance and adventure. The tales were more gritty than most stories for children, filled with intrigue and violence as they were. Amne still keeps Hapani literature and music on her personal datapad. She believes that communities are meant to be led--be it by a monarch, elected official, or a ship's captain--and that order is necessary to protect as many people as possible. Amne never cared to stop defaulting to the use of feminine pronouns, even when speaking in Basic, although she refrains from doing so when she's trying to conceal her identity. Amne remained in the habit of using Hapani years when referring to past events - often, for example, giving the year of her birth as '14 - which was confusing for many of her Imperial compatriots. Her wardrobe is heavily influenced by Hapani fashion. It is frequently remarked that she is friendly to strangers and takes a diplomatic approach to problem-solving. She has many friends but confides in few, although her emotions are often readily apparent. She never forgets the lives she has taken and the people she has lost, but she tries to focus on the beauty and love that's still around her.
Relationships
Friends
Nalani Connell -
Lane Rendell - Lane initially expressed romantic interest in Amne, which she did not return, but they became friends on her twenty-fifth birthday as they worked together to reclaim his space station from pirates.[3] Amne later teasingly expressed her apologies when she learned that Rendell nearly married Thalia Brando, with whom she was familiar due to her undercover assignment in Garos.[1]
Ninian DeLayn - Amne and Ninian met as unlikely allies when Amne's Hapan fleet was temporarily assigned to Deep Core to assist the Imperial Navy. The Hapan women stood in stark contrast during their first meeting. Ninian had been adopted and raised by Corellians and knew nothing of her native culture. Amne was inclined to look upon Imperials with distaste due to their misogynistic culture, viewed as ludicrous in the Hapes Cluster. They became friends although they did not meet again until years later, when Amne was a senior enlisted member of the Imperial Army and Ninian was a commanding officer in the Navy.
Alexander Kuhn -
Family
Lydia Zailyn - Lydia started her life of crime as a young woman, beginning her career in a smuggling gang.
Amne is unaware that her father is the Hapan nobleman Rohlan Dermot, and he is similarly unaware that he has a daughter with Lydia. This would ostensibly make her related to the Nikoris family, but it is uncertain whether his wife's children are his. It is therefore possible that Amne is not only his oldest but his sole biological child.
Romance
Euna Miriel - After they were assigned to work together for a covert Imperial Intelligence mission, Amne's friendship with Euna blossomed into a full-fledged romance.
Dianthe Tal'e -
