Biography
Kol Seraph was born on Coruscant, in Sah'c Town District, on Y-7 D234. His parents, Garran and Lasha Seraph, were refugees from a conflict in Outer Rim, and as such, young Kol was raised in poverty. When he was three, an outbreak of plague in his home district separated the boy from his parents, as he and other impoverished children who had not been afflicted with the disease were rounded up by the authorities. He was raised by in the harsh environment of the Coruscanti Youth Commission, and was subject to all manner of indignities and medical experimentation during his formative years (although it did give Kol something that amounted to a basic education). When he was 12, Kol successfully escaped from the Youth Commission facility, and made his way home, finding it deserted after a quarantine had starved out those trapped inside several years earlier. In a fit of rage, Seraph set the tenement hab he considered home ablaze, and did not resist when the Youth Commission sent its collection agents to bring him back.
It became obvious that Kol intended to be brought back, so that he could show others how to escape, as a group of adolescents had a much better chance of surviving on the streets than a lone wolf. Under Kol's direction, a sizeable group of boys escaped the orphanage yet again, this time travelling to the notorious and deadly Undercity, a place where Kol knew for certain the Youth Commission wouldn't follow them. Here, Kol and his fellows formed a street gang known as the 'Undercity Shades', named after a local legend of inhuman creatures that stalked the twilight streets and back alleys, striking at prey from the shadows. The Shades soon gained a reputation on the streets, as a fraternity of vicious young boys who never backed down from a fight. Leading them were Kol and his lieutenants, the oldest, biggest, and smartest of the children, to whom the younger members looked up to as guardians. After several years of making a name for themselves, the Shades joined a coordinated gang war between their rivals on the streets, and the ruling Organized Crime family. 4 years of fighting on the streets saw the gangs very nearly triumph against the Mob and its hired mercenaries, until they were all betrayed by greedy traitors in their midst. The Shades themselves were not spared in the crossfire. In the aftermath, Kol, recognized as a leader among the vanquished, was forced to watch as the mercenaries tortured and executed his fellow Shades, his brothers. When finally the last Shade's life had been snuffed out, Kol knew his time had come, and he prepared himself to die... that is, until a squad of Imperial Stormtroopers made their way onto the scene, mercilessly gunning down the freelancers and hired thugs. The Empire was cleaning up the streets of the Undercity, and Kol's life had not only been spared, it had been redefined.
16 at the time, Kol made up his mind to serve in the Imperial Army, becoming a devout adherent of the tenets of the New Order virtually overnight. He accompanied the soldiers back up to the upper levels, and made his way to a Recruitment Station. Too young to enlist in the Army right away, Kol's desire to serve was not ignored, and instead, he was offered the chance to join the newly formed Imperial Youth Militia, where his viciousness and streetwise ways could be put to use to serve the Empire. His experience leading the Shades benefited him greatly here, and Kol excelled, eventually being among the first to attain the rank of Cadet-Warrant Officer, and earning a full scholarship to the Imperial Academy.
As soon as he turned 18 (the minimum age for enrolment in the Academy), Kol did so, becoming Recruit Seraph. Here, gifted hopefuls were assigned to personal tutors with a great deal of experience in the adult branches of the Galactic Empire. Kol himself had the distinct honor of being selected by none other than Army Captain Rik Zoidic, then Commanding Officer of the 3rd Imperial Legion, who noted Kol's ability to adapt to new situations, his insatiable hunger for knowledge, and his undeniably impressive skill at both evasion and marksmanship. And so, upon graduation, Captain Zoidic recommended Private Seraph be assigned to the Reconnaissance Corps, as a Designated Marksman.
Initially expecting to be assigned to Captain Zoidic's Legion, Kol was surprised when he was instead assigned to the 1st Legion, the premier unit in the Imperial Army. It would be here that his steady climb up the ranks would occur. Seraph's innate skill with precision marksmanship earned him a promotion to Corporal, and his deft leadership during an operation to retrieve an Imperial Army starfighter from an Eidola Pirate installation made him a Non Commissioned Officer. Having a gift for Army administration that outshone even his skill with a precision blaster rifle, Seraph became Signals Officer for the 1st Legion as a Sergeant, a highly impressive feat, and as a Master Sergeant, he was appointed Executive Officer of the 1st Brigade, under Captain Akai Ai. Ever restless in his quest to better serve the New Order, and with his insatiable ambition to go further, Kol pursued Part-Time employment within COMPNOR, on top of his Full-Time Army duties.
While engaged in a boarding operation of a renegade Imperial space installation (a boarding operation planned by Seraph himself, as a matter of fact), Kol, a Command Sergeant at the time, was given a field commission to 2nd Lieutenant, becoming one of the few Imperial Army soldiers to climb all the way up the enlisted ranks and attain an Officer's Commission before he was 20. Shortly thereafter, Lieutenant Seraph was offered a Brigade of his own to command: the 4th Reconnaissance Brigade, 'the Spectres'. He did not refuse, and his leadership of this unit earned him another promotion to 1st Lieutenant several months after taking command.
Later on in the year, Lieutenant Seraph requested a leave of absence, the duration of which made it necessary for him to step down as Brigade CO, and pass the torch onto his XO, Captain Icarus Carinae. Sometime during this period, it is now known that Kol successfully completed the notoriously difficult preliminary entrance exams for Imperial Intelligence. Upon returning, Seraph submitted a transfer request to his Chain of Command, making clear his intention to retire from the Imperial Army and join the Directorate of Imperial Intelligence as a full time Agent.
