As he finished his primary studies, Julian became outwardly militant. Despite the peace he took for granted, the Empire was at war. His readings and political engagements would bring news of a health crisis, or terror attack - things always boiling in the reckless lawlessness outside of Imperial space - that appeared to come closer every day. How could he justify inheriting affluence and security when, somewhere, he could be forcing a change? His parents did not disuade him from visiting recruiters. Nor did they restrict his trips to firing ranges or martial arts centers when athletics no longer served as a proper outlet. And they did not dismiss his anxieties or dismay at the dinner table, but conversations would usually end the same: he ought to be thankful for his lot and focus on building better opportunities at home.

Born on the planet Dakshee, a temperate planet prospering in the peace of the Galactic Empire's rule, Valendrift was instilled with great personal pride and determination at the earliest of ages by a close knit family. The middle class family prospered with a growing computer technologies company founded two generations prior. Julian's interests, however, lay in the military, perfect for his self-taught skills with a blaster, natural athleticism and a sense of duty he felt expanded beyond his family. Whenever not excelling in his studies he would slip away to watch Imperial Stormtroopers march, contrary to his group of friends that found themselves vying for a seat in a cockpit. He would stay up countless nights reading the most recent events in the Galactic News, always pondering what his life would be like out of his protected system. Despite his passion for a different life, he dreaded that he would inevitably find himself in the family industry.

Julian Valendrift is an esteemed Imperial and fiercely dedicated soldier currently serving in the Imperial army.

Character History

Julian was born the second of three children on the planet temperate planet of Dakshee. As a resident of one of the larger coastal metropolises with the planet's largest starport, Julian benefited from surroundings flush with the products of Imperial peace. Abundant trade, safe streets, room to live and every amenity within reach. His family was close knit, his parents fostering competitiveness and compassion. The family business was founded as a fluid computer software company and now traded in of hypercommunications and data encryption. There was room to grow and each of the children had some dream for the slice of the company that might be their's. His parents were also leaders in the local COMPNOR party, and they each came into their own as dutiful, active citizens. Julian, more than the others, found himself progressively more concerned by his daily findings on the Galactic News. He started to wonder if his service - his calling - would be somewhere far away from Dakshee.

He didn't share the wanderlust of many of his friends, who were eager for military service just to get on a ship anywhere. But he found a certain calm observing the local Army garrison on parade march through the city or through the field. He was a talented student, with a valuable education in hand many years ahead of his peers. He started to seriously consider a career in uniform.

Julian gradually found himself chaffing at the expectations of joining the company and adding the next building blocks. He had a knack for administration and team building, but didn't feel like the tasks were serious enough - or the stakes bombastic enough. But it was the news that unsettled him the most. The Galactic Alliance at that time was like a chimera from a horror-vid, comically misshapen but with a ravenous appetite an appalling lack of consideration for those it would associate with. This fact would be the one that shattered his world, when his father was among those killed in a starport disaster when he was striking business out of sector. The pirates who gloated responsibility for the heinous crime were found within weeks to have funding sources in the GA.

With the passing of their father, the Valendrift children were further pressed to resume the expansion of contacts in the Corporate Sector while their mother managed the rest of the growing business. He had indeed found a way off of Dakshee to systems he had never thought of seeing, but unlike his older brother and younger sister, Julian abhorred the often grueling processes of their industry. Though micromanaging and administration were not alien to him, it lacked the activity he so greatly desired. Refusing to participate in any more business related travels, he ignored his family's scorn and returned home. His reunion with the few old friends either reluctantly stayed or were waiting to leave was soon shattered. Weeks after his abrupt 'retirement', the planet-side starport many stars away suffered from a New Republic incursion into the system. While the attack was a failure, the damage was done. Among those killed was his elder brother, and the effect of it was not lost on the remaining Valendrift's lightyears away.

His mother spent months in grief, prompting Julian and his sister to provide her care. Julian made sure she was situated at home and hosted a memorial ceremony for the his brother once it was clear his body could not be retrieved. His sister, though a survivor, would require years of physical and psychologic therapy before she would be the same again, adding to the family's trauma. In the time of recovery that followed, Madeline Valendrift returned to managing the company somewhat obsessively. It was now a shell of what it used to be; though still profitable, it became isolated to Dakshee once again. With the expression of his desire to join the Army, Julian received no harsh rebuke nor was pleaded to reconsider. Ensuring the security of her support structure before his departure, he reported to the local recruiter and found himself on a shuttle to Cardia days later.

Imperial Army

Upon completing basic training, Julian became an enlisted trooper in the Imperial Army. Within days of his new status, he was on the battlefield as a participant in Operation Sovereign Canopy on Derra IV. His first days were marred by the combined pressures of ferocious Krayt Dragons and Galactic Alliance combatants. Demonstrating a balance of tactical sense and ferocity, he quickly become a non-commissioned officer whilst further developing as a professional soldier. Julian lead hardened stormtrooper platoons through the smoke choked streets, hostile jungles and charred plains until the conclusion of his unit's tour on the planet. These experiences greatly shaped his outlook and affirmed his belief that there was something more meaningful he could do in the Galactic Civil War. Julian received his officer's commission shortly after the conclusion of Sovereign Canopy for his noted valor and distinguished ability to lead on the field.

Following his tour of active combat, Julian engaged in every facet of Army life. He honed his combat skills with nearly every second of spare time. He purchased a defunct foundry with half a career's worth of savings for firing ranges to broaden his understanding of various weapons. Before he became engaged, he actively searched for arenas ranging from the military barracks to private studios to refine his hand to hand disciplines. A veteran Julian engaged planet side threats in the brigade's enforcement of Imperial law. He qualified for elite combative status during one of his numerous assignments.

Command

His brigade encountered a fair amount of challenges, especially a tremulous period within its command structure. The departure of numerous Brigade Commanders Julian pursued opportunities as they emerged, gladly accepting the responsibilities that came with them. He served dutifully as the 2nd Brigade's Executive Officer under his fellow legionnaire and long time mentor Mikal Blak until the aforementioned's transfer to COMPNOR.
