Katelyn "Kate" Black-Granger is a member of the Imperial Regional Government, a professor working at the Imperial Academy, and a writer for the Imperial News Bureau. She is the wife of Greg Black-Granger and mother of Cassy and James Black-Granger.

Biography

Early life

Born to Flight Corporal Tobias Tilney and his wife Litara, Kate spent her early years either at home or playing with the children of other families living in the married quarters of the Galactic Republic's Coruscant Home Fleet. When Kate was three, her mother, a former smuggler from Wistril, disappeared, abandoning her family and leaving no trace as to her whereabouts. Kate was sent to live with her paternal grandparents on Alderaan. Tobias followed suit once his tour of duty was completed, wanting to raise Kate with the help of his family. He found work as the navigator of a space freighter and was away from home for weeks at a time. The Tilneys settled in Nc'Taan where her grandfather worked as an architect and her grandmother, a nurse, was able to commute to her job at a hospital in Aldera.

Schooling

Kate entered a dual credit enrollment program, receiving credits at the University of Alderaan whilst in secondary school. She also worked part-time in Aldera as a library stacker, often bringing home datatapes and datacards that struck her fancy to watch in her spare time. Around this time, there was much Alderaanian dissent about the growing bureaucratic nature of the Galactic Republic military and the on-going hostilities with disillusioned planetary governments that had seceded from the Republic.

After Kate graduated from secondary school, she decided to study political science at the University of Alderaan. She was sent to her homeworld of Coruscant to work as a government functionary as part of her schooling. As a result, Kate was able to see first-hand the ineffectiveness of the Republic system, feeling that if the government was going to be proactive and actually care for its citizens, it was in need of serious reformation with strong leadership. Therefore, when Hiram Drayson, backed by the other Admirals of the Core Worlds, emerged as a strong, influential and capable leader, Kate supported him when he re-organized the Republic into the Galactic Empire and declared himself Emperor.

Naval service

Following the formation of the Empire, Alderaan rebelled and declared itself an independent planetary government. Kate dropped out of the university and, uncertain of her current job prospects and noticing that most prominent politicians had done their own tours of duty, she decided to enlist in the Imperial Navy. Kate attended and excelled at the Imperial Academy on Carida, graduating with honours. After undergoing intense training and testing, she was assigned to serve the Navy as a TIE pilot in the 271st Interceptor Squadron.

Kate was eventually given command of a wing, with three pilots as her subordinates. When the squadron was attached to the Nebulon-B frigate Crog's Grotto, Kate first met then-Second Lieutenant Greg Black-Granger, the frigate's commander. After dating for several months, including a long-term operation on Coruscant which resulted in eighty terrorists being captured through intelligence and undercover work, Kate and Greg married onboard the COMPForce flagship, the Victory-class Star Destroyer Widowmaker, by its captain. Kate soon became pregnant with Cassy and James in quick succession and retired from active duty.

Raising a family

Greg remained in active service while Kate cared for their two children, born one year apart, with the help of her grandmother. Soon after her husband's promotion to First Lieutenant, he accepted the offer to work for Cortar Medical, which would allow him to spend much more time with the family. He handed in his discharge papers, and the family moved to Csilla. When the plans with Cortar Medical fell through a year later, Greg's career with the Galactic Empire unable to be revived, and their funds depleted, the Black-Granger family moved to Greg's homeworld Kathol, living there for the next three years. Even though she understood why the government was wary of her and her husband, Kate was frustrated that they couldn't return to serving the Empire they both supported wholeheartedly.

New Imperial Order

In Year 5, Kate supported her husband's decision to enlist in the New Imperial Order. A few months later, the family moved to Kothlis and Kate began working as an Agent for the Ministry of Justice.

In Year 9, Kate was sent to prepare the preliminary report on the security state on Ortenga, whose second major city Defringo had been destroyed, and some citizens killed, in a riot. Accompanied by her daughter Cassy, who was a member of the SA-Group and was sent along as a learning experience, they helped the North-Western Garrison at Niakwa fight off the uprisers.

Return to the Empire

About a year later, the New Imperial Order and the Galactic Empire merged into one government. Kate decided to transfer to the Imperial Army as a Corporal, the equivalent to the rank she had when she'd left military service nearly fifteen years before. After a while, following her promotion to Staff Sergeant, she realized that the military was no longer for her and became a civilian once more.

Personality and Traits

Kate was a strong supporter of Imperial ideology. Kate is friendly and approachable, always willing to help if she can, but only confides in very few. She doesn't hate or dislike aliens but is a supporter of humanocentrism. She cannot stand self-centeredness and disloyalty. She's empathetic and has a strong intuition that she trusts, which enables her to perceive a situation from multiple standpoints. She emotionally detaches during battles or crises and represses her feelings, and later has trouble coming to terms with those; she sometimes becomes overwhelmed weeks afterward and crashes. Kate sometimes has trouble paying attention to the fine details – misplacing items or forgetting , or not noticing, things she should know.

She strongly disliked the Jedi Order, seeing them as power-hungry, deluded hypocrites. She blamed the Jedi for the Clone Wars and her father's early death as his commander had been a Jedi Master.
