Creation
The Second Imperial Fleet (2IF) was officially formed on November 5, 2005. The new Second was a merger between the old Elrood Defense Fleet and the original Second Imperial Fleet. Fleet Admiral Samurai took command of the fleet as its first commanding officer. Captain Dimitri Sephiroth was appointed as fleet XO.
Reformation
A matter of days after the fleet’s formation, its first test as an operational unit came along. Rebel forces on Commenor were aggravating the Imperial High Command, and it was decided that the 2IF should give the scum a bloody nose as a warning against further insolence on their part. The blockade of Commenor lasted two months, from December 2005 through January 2006. The mission was the first of many for the fleet, but was important in that it demonstrated the ability of the fleet’s personnel to mesh quickly, a characteristic that has stayed with the unit to this day.
After the blockade of Commenor, Naval High Command decided that FAdm Samurai could be better used elsewhere, and made over the day-to-day command of the fleet to Captain Sephiroth. Then-Lt. Commander Dujaan Korr was promoted to FXO. But as soon as the structure of the 2IF was changed, it men and women were tested again, this time in a massive campaign which would result in the humiliation of the treacherous Trade Federation.
Throughout late 2005 and in the first days of 2006, the Trade Federation’s relationship with the Empire had been deteriorating. The Federation’s leadership, which had recently changed hands, was power-hungry, and the dominance of the Empire in both the economic and political arena was galling. But the beings leading the business conglomerate were not merely jealous – their highest executives were under the influence of rebel diplomats. What the rebellion offered the Trade Federation in return for breaking its trade agreements with the Empire no one really knows. What is certain is that whatever they gained for their treachery was disproportionate to the losses they suffered at the hands of the Imperial military machine.
Operation Warspite began on February 25, 2006. The offensive was one of the largest in Imperial history, involving two entire fleets (the First and Second) and an entire legion of the Imperial Army. Large numbers of elite COMPFORCE troops were also employed. The offensive targeted eleven Federation systems simultaneously, an incredible area to cover even for the massive Imperial military. The operation would also be a difficult testing ground for many of the enlisted personnel in the fleet, including Staff Flight Sergeant Janos Korin, Flight Sergeant Orphaea Imperium, and Crewman Yuthar Sith. Other noteworthy pilots who made their debut in Operation Warspite included Crewmen Rafel Jamel and Andhers Jakhim.
Operation Warspite fleet |
The offensive was to last over two months, and though eventually successful, the pilots and officers of the 2IF were pulled out of Warspite early to launch a new offensive against the traitors of the New Imperial Order (NIO), which began on March 29th and was, at the time, a top secret mission code-named “Operation Bulldozer.” The operation lasted 17 days, and was spectacularly successful.
Operation Bulldozer targeted NIO expansion efforts in the Bothan sector. The mission was entirely based on the arrest and execution of hundreds of NIO construction workers, most of which had been hired by monies donated by the Eidolan pirates. In the spring of 2006, the New Imperial Order was alive and well with the spirit of fanaticism typical of revolutionaries, and was considered by most of Imperial High Command to be very dangerous, which it was. At that time the NIO still had many experienced officers who had only months before been in key positions in the Empire. Active and capable men such as Garen Karrade, former aide to then-Minister Thrawn, were part of the NIO leadership. (Months later Karrade would return to the Empire and would eventually be chosen to lead the Ministry of Truth.)
But the 2IF’s attack on the Bothan sector would prove to be the end of the NIO as a military threat to the Empire. Using surprise to their advantage, the pilots of the 2IF inflicted thousands of casualties on the NIO over the three target systems. That same month the fleet was awarded the “Fleet of the Month” award, largely for its actions in the Bothan sector. Though the main offensive lasted a little over two weeks, it was not until April 30 that the last Imperial forces finally withdrew from NIO territory, leaving behind yet another shattered insurrection.
Changes
The months of May and June were quiet, but in July the winds began to shift again. Commander Prijo Sacha joined the fleet as LTCMDR Korr left on an extended LOA, just as the fleet was re-assigned to the Elrood Sector. Their home base was to be the Kathol system, but a sudden change of events in the political relationship between the Empire and the Kathol Republic obviously changed that. The fleet was moved to Khuiumin, where it would stay for almost a year. New pilots also arrived to reinforce the fleet, including Rafel Jamel, Gredek Dregoth and Bryan Valoran. MFSGT Orphaea Imperium joined the fleet at the beginning of September at the personal request of CMDR Sacha. Janos Korin was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and placed in command of Alpha Wing, with SFSGT Yuthar Sith assigned as the group’s XO.
While all these changes were occurring in the fleet, one treacherous pilot decided to take advantage of the situation. The man was FSGT Thomas Givons, described by Korin “a very emotional man . . . his actions could often be described as a little immature.” Givons stole a Carrack-class Cruiser and left the Elrood sector in direct contradiction of CMDR Sacha’s orders. Months later the warship was recovered. Givons was never found, but some time after the story of his death was told by a drunken pirate in some god-forsaken corner of the galaxy. Like any other being who had ever turned over an Imperial ship to pirates, he had been ruthlessly murdered in cold blood by those he had attempted to deal with.
October brought yet another change in fleet command. FAdm Samurai, who had been closely overseeing the 2IF since his technical departure as its immediate CO, was promoted to the position of Navy Executive Officer, a position which left little time for his fleet. Captain Prijo Sacha became the new FCO, with LTCMDR Corran Nu as FXO. Sacha’s first directive from NHC was the punishment of the treasonous Kathol Republic. Only a few select pilots were chosen to participate in one of the longest covert operations of the war against the rebellion. Led in the field by LTjg Janos Korin, the group was composed of less than a dozen pilots, including CMN1 Bryan Valoran and CMN Karl Donitz who were assigned to operate directly to the Republic’s capital planet. Over the next 93 days, the 2IF would once again prove its effectiveness and competence at all levels of command, from the lowly Crewman to the FCO.
For three months the tiny group of Imperial pilots evaded Kathol security forces, often flying in distinctive TIE-Scouts. Despite their obvious origins, the Imperial pilots bested all that Kathol could throw at them, including the vaunted Kathol Special Operations Division. Each of the pilots worked closely with Moff Kiltar, who had access to each generator’s virus activation code, to ensure that Kathol’s cities went unpowered for the majority of the three months that the operation lasted. When the mission was recalled in early January, the entire 2IF could boast of its pilots’ efforts against the Kathol Republic.
As always, the fleet would never stop to rest on its laurels. The fleet was redeployed in mid-January against SoroSuub, another organization which had joined the ever-widening rebellion against the Empire. The operation was code-named “Strike on Sluis,” not a very secretive name to be sure, but the fleet’s objective was not secrecy this time, but rather an open show of force against the rebellious Sullustans. The operation was conducted in conjunction with the Army, which landed several regiments on Sullust’s surface, temporarily driving the rebel ground troops underground into Sullust’s endless caverns. For 39 days the Imperial Army walked freely on the rebel planet’s surface, ruthlessly eliminating any rebel who dared showed his face above ground. The mission would have been flawless, had it not been for the untimely death of SFSGT Barion Surkov in a friendly collision above Sullust’s atmosphere. The tragic accident put a damper on the success of the mission, but all told the mission was an outstanding success.
The fleet returned to Khuiumin on February 22, and immediately began work on building a new city. Named Secundus Prime by LTjg Orphaea Imperium, the project was the Navy’s first experiment with fleet cities, a concept which would come to be known colloquially as the Naval Economic Development Plan, a new strategy which would eventually involve the entire Navy in the day-to-day building of the Empire. Secundus Prime, funded exclusively by private donations from 2IF pilots, was a city designed for wealth. The city was completed in less than a month, a shining example of Imperial engineering and the dedication of the Empire’s soldiers to their chosen cause.
The spring of 2007 was a quiet one for the fleet, but on April 30 the winds of war returned once again to the Outer Rim. It was the Empire which struck first this time. Captain Sacha began deploying more and more portions of the fleet to aggressive patrol efforts, this time equipping pilots with A&E privileges. The 2IF began targeting planets controlled by Nova Industries and several other smaller rebel factions. Though the patrols turned only a small profit for the war effort, the experience gained in them would prove invaluable in the months to come.
Trying times
One June 26 fleet command received urgent orders to blockade the Torina system. Imperial intelligence had learned that the Falleen Federation was moving in that area, and Minister Goth was anxious to show them the might of the Imperial military. The blockade would prove to be the beginning of one of the most trying times in the fleet’s history. Fortunately for the fleet and Empire, Vice Admiral Zachary Savk returned from retirement to become the “Admiral of the Fleet,” a position similar to that held by FAdm Samurai months before. The assignment could not have proved more timely, coming as it did during one of Captain Sacha’s extended leaves.
For several weeks the fleet stalked the space lanes in the Torina system, seizing a number of illegal smugglers and random rebel ships. On July 16, the fleet received yet another urgent communiqué from Coruscant. A new force of chaos was rising in the Outer Rim. New construction efforts were beginning on Imperial systems, without IHC approval. Nothing was known about this new insurgency yet, but the Falleen were suspected.
It was quickly realized that the new insurgency had its eye on the Imperial planets of Ossirag, Yamr, and Berea. The 2IF, caught with almost half its members on LOA or scattered around the rest of the galaxy, scrambled to defend Imperial territory. It did not take long for the fleet to realize that something big was in the air. Imperial patrols, conducting initial sweeps of enemy construction zones, were shocked at the massive numbers of terrorists who had been assembled for what was obviously intended to be a massive offensive against the entire Elrood sector.
The defense of Elrood was code-named Operation Elrude by Vadm Savk. If any one mission characterizes the 2IF, it is this one. Rebel forces, led by terrorist leader Kurami Jankov, launched one of the largest campaigns of the war, comparable to the Empire’s Operation Bulldozer and the New Republic’s assault on Sumitra earlier that year. In a strange twist of fate, Operation Elrude lasted exactly as long as Operation Bulldozer – 17 days. The battle was frenetic from the Imperial standpoint – rebel outposts and construction zones were uncovered regularly, and for a time it seemed that the insurgency’s supply of soldiers was limitless. But gradually, the fleet’s round-the-clock efforts began to stem the tide of flesh and blood. Despite the best training any government could provide, the fleet still lost one of its own – FSGT Timidor Hauthorn, recently returned form the reserves, lost contact with fleet command sometime on July 24. His whereabouts are unknown to this day. Some suspect he was captured by rebel operatives, perhaps forced to turn traitor against the Empire. Hauthorn had been popular during his brief return to active duty, and his loss was deeply felt by the entire fleet, burdened already as it was by long hours and a seemingly undefeatable enemy.
The Imperial Colonial Police quickly arrived to reinforce the 2IF, which was also joined by volunteer security forces from ex-Governer Brat Cost Ru’s BlasTech Industries. Ru’s contributions to the defense of the Elrood sector also played an important role in the defeat of the newly-proclaimed Red Star Alliance (RSA). On August 2, fleet command was able to announce the tentative defeat of the rebel offensive in Elrood. Several days later Emperor Bonias turned control of Elrood over to BlasTech Industries. This move came as a surprise to the rank and file of the fleet, but most were content that the sector remained under nominal Imperial control.
Had it not been for the unexpected exile of Brat Cost Ru several months later, Elrood would have remained an Imperial bastion. Unfortunately, the leadership vacuum caused by the president's departure allowed the dying RSA to gain the upper hand in the continuing struggle for the sector. By the end of September 2007, the Elrood sector was almost entirely in the hands of the rebellion. The Empire and its Navy, now concerned primarily with the defense and fortification of core sectors, has made no visible attempts to regain its lost territories in the Outer Rim. A tragic development for the inhabitants of Elrood, no doubt, but a necessary sacrifice to ensure the security of the Core.
New pilots
By the middle of August the entire 2IF had transferred its home base from Khuiumin to Carida. Formerly in a state of semi-isolation, the pilots of the 2IF now enjoyed the security and activity of one of the core worlds. New pilots fresh from the Academy arrived in large numbers, swelling the 2IF's size to previously unknown numbers. Patrols in the Carida system were and remain to this day almost as extensive as those at Corellia and Kuat.
Navy-wide reforms were quick to follow. Captain Sacha was removed from fleet command to work full-time at the Imperial Centre of Recruitment. VAdm Savk took over as official Fleet CO. CMDR Dujaan Korr was reassigned to another fleet, leaving LTCMDR Janos Korin as FXO. LT Beckhart, formerly of the Imperial Army, was assigned as Chief of Staff, but left after only a few short months. The Group system was eliminated - Fleet Command now consisted of VAdm Savk (FCO), LTCMDR Korin (FXO).
The fleet began its second fleet city project on Sauvir on August 24, on a previously abandoned city named Hitachi. Very few members of the fleet were involved in the actual construction, which was completed by end of September. As October passed into November, the fleet embarked on a series of maneuvers which were intended to increase the fleet's flexibility and decrease its response time.
(more to come)
Previous Fleet Commanding Officers
Fleet Admiral Samurai
- Was the 2IFs first commanding officer. Captain Dimitri Sephiroth was appointed as fleet FXO. At the beginning of 2006, right aftert the successful Blockade of Commemor, NHC decided they needed Admiral Samurais sound abilities in other areas. His XO Captain Sephiroth took over the daily duties and soon enough Samurai took the “Admiral of the Fleet” position. Later in October of the same year FAdm Samurai, who had been closely overseeing the 2IF since his technical departure as its immediate CO, was promoted to the position of Navy Executive Officer, a change which would leave the Fleet Admirals position vacant for a long time. *
*(Big thank you to all those who helped to retrieve Samurais old avatar and to BGEN Kex who was the one finally coming up with it.).
Captain Dimitri Sephiroth
- Captain Sephiroth was appointed to the fleet commander position right after the Blockade of Commemor in the first quarter of 2006, while LTCMDR Dujaan Korr became the new FXO. Some of Sephiroths closest friends and comrades in arms knew him to be a true Imperial from the depths of his heart and soul, who fulfilled every duty faultlessly. One reason for this was that a long time ago the peaceful population of his home planet Nar Challa was whiped out by the ruthless Hutts. Before fleeing into excile he had to witness the death of his parents, former rulers of Nar Challas monarchy, and his poor sister suffering an even worse fate at the hands of disgusting aliens before getting killed as well. From that moment on he hated every single hutt that crossed his path and was willing to bestowe order and justice with all means necessary to make sure everybody was safe and happy. It was only a matter of time until he found his new home in the Empire. Sephiroth was one of the rare people that had served the Imperial Core, the Dark Empire, and the Galactic Empire in a row and had risen rather high in the Imperial rank structure during his long career. 2006 he retired from the Empire with the rank of Commodore.
Captain Prijo Sacha
- In Octover 2006 he became the new FCO, after joining the fleet mid 2006, with LTCMDR Corran Nu as FXO. An unignorable accumulation of inconsistencies over his 8 month long service prompted NHC to step in and command was given to Vice Admiral Savk. Nothing ever could be proved and thus he was never officialy trialed for any of the accusations that lead up to his replacement. Still Sacha never saw any commanding position again, moved through various office duty positions and later left the Empire to join the BlasTech Corporation, or BTC, an independent enterprise that did span several sectors. BTI was the successor to the Imperial Outer Rim Authority, that acted on behalf of the Galactic Empire. Later BlasTech broke relations with the Empire, joined into an Alliance with the Red Star Alliance and after that was reformed into the Pentastar Alignment - a declared enemy of the Galactic Empire. What became of Sacha is unknown.
Vice Admiral Zachary Savk
- Vice Admiral Zachary Savk, who shortly before had returned to active duty after a 3 year break, took over on the 7th of July 2007, LTCMDR Jakhim became his XO. Time went by and the 2IF prospered under Savks guidance and his able XOs dedication. A few months later Savk was, once again, called to higher duty in NHC. He surrendered the FCO position to LTCMDR Jakhim and was given the Admiral of the Fleet position, which only once before had been held by an Imperial officer in the history of the 2IF. After his first month LTCMDR Jakhim stepped down as CO and LTCMDR Korin took over the helm. Under CMDR Korins command and the watchful eyes of Admiral Savk, the 2if was the first fleet in the Empire to receive the valued Fleet Of Month Award for 2 months in a row! Then disaster struck as the Navy CO Admiral Caldor Assam was murdered by cowardly traitors. The CoC kicked in and with Assad dead RADM Vulcan had to step up to the task of leading the Imperial Navy, with Savk as his NXO. Vulcans new duties made it impossible to deal with the entire Navy and the needs of his own fleet. A fleet of the Emperor was in need, since the 8IF now was without a proper commander, as well as without any able officers. So on Y10D77 Savk - the Admiral of the 2IF and it's long time CO was transfered over to the 8th. The Second wishes him luck in his endeavour to restore the 8th and make it as good a fleet to serve in as the Second is.
Lieutenant Commander Andhers Jakhim
- Being the right hand of the fleet commander for many months he stepped up to command position as Admiral Savk was called to higher duty in NHC. So LtCmdr Jakhim stepped up to the difficult task to lead the Second Imperial Fleet, which he did for a whole month with formidable results. Still this able Imperial officer felt that he could not give the fleet members all the level of attention that he expects a Commanding Officer to give his fleet. Rather than waiting for something bad to happen he wisely contacted parts of Naval High Command and asked to be replaced. After stepping down LtCmdr Jakhim was granted the position of Fleet Advisor, a position that was last used when Commodore Hack Skice was a part of the fleet.
Captain Janos Korin
- Janos Korin, as a would-be-scientist, has a great mind with calculations, predicting, and excellent 3D imagination. Calculating courses or what a situation might look like some time was always easy for him. On the other hand he was never a kind of man that made relations with others easy. His crew might respect him, but he often is too distant and sometimes a bit strange to be a 'buddy' to them.
