Personal History
Early Life
Arkonis was born on the planet Corulag in the Corulus System to Janu Deadrorian, a Senior Prefect in the Galactic Empire and Zade Deadrorian, a diplomatic aid to her husband. He has one sibling, a brother, Korden Deadrorian, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Corulag Politics
Corulag |
Arkonis' father, Janu was born of a moderately wealthy family. The Deadrorian's had been entrenched in Corulag politics for generations with varying degrees. Many believe that the Deadrorian's were once one of the original Quintad, a group of five powerful families that fled Corulag to setup an industrial powerhouse and rule the planet Eriadu. It's believed the Deadrorians reconsidered after an alliance with local Imperial rule was offered in exchange for wealth and position. Janu always scoffed at rumors, choosing to rely on fact and local politics, quickly rising through the ranks of the regional government with relentless ambition.
Janu's first son was Korden, who, unlike his father, grew up dreaming of a life outside Imperial control and was a constant disappointment. Brash and fearless, Korden was impossible to control. Cut off from his father, he eventually found a way to access his family's wealth, syphoning a little at a time until he had enough to purchase a small freighter ship. Within a year Korden's rebellious track record was brought before his father, Janu by local Imperial authorities. Detained and with his ship impounded, Korden confessed to his father of his illegal spice runs between various undisclosed Core Worlds. Janu used his influence to procure his son's release and Korden swore to be evermore faithful. Korden kept his promise for many months until his mother Zade became pregnant with their second son, Arkonis.
Janu Deadrorian in his prime |
Arkonis, eager to get his life started even from the beginning, was born three weeks premature. He spent those few first weeks under close observation at Corulag's medical facility. His mother, Zade, due to complications and excessive bleeding, died giving birth to Arkonis. Janu never recovered emotionally from his wife's death, eventually losing his ambition and never advancing past his post as Senior Prefect. Korden, angry at his mothers untimely death, and taking the opportunity afforded by his father's distraction, snuck aboard a freighter and set off for the Outer Rim Territories never to be heard from again.
Arkonis developed quickly. He was mischievous in his early years, always finding his way into trouble. One particular afternoon, Janu was busy prepping the days end report, when a rush of water flooded his office. Janu quickly discovered that Arkonis was "merely curious" as to how the valves controlled the flow of water in their home. This curiosity would lead to Arkonis' ability to grasp ideas and concepts quickly, but would also steer him down a path his father had feared since his birth.
Once Arkonis was of age, under the guidance of his father, he was tutored in local politics, but the sprawling city of Curamelle provided many distractions for Arkonis during his teenage years and kept him from reaching his full potential. Two sides of behavior emerged. The first, was the prodigal son, dedicated to his work, bringing tact and attention to detail to his studies, always professional and charming with everyone he encountered. The second was, to the dismay of his father, too much like Korden: rowdy, curious, and with an insatiable appetite for the excitement of underworld activities. Arkonis took to the streets every night after his studies. He developed a true understanding of personal politics through his time gambling in seedy dens, talking his way out of bad debts, and swindling local merchants out of their goods. He also had a strong inclination towards too much Corellian ale. Janu began to wonder if Arkonis would stop his studies altogether and go chasing after his brother in the far reaches of the galaxy.
Lure of Immortality
Academy for Young Imperials Barracks |
In an attempt at reigning in Arkonis' destructive mischief, Janu entered him into the Academy for Young Imperials. Arkonis was resistant at first. He was still young and foolhardy and the academy made too many promises of long hours of study, rigorous course material, strict enforcement of free time, and the expected adherence to the Imperial Code of Laws. Arkonis, still had links with many underworld figures, though no one of importance, and sometimes worried about losing the respect he worked so hard to get.
He soon saw another solution. An academy instructor named Ghen Thorne, was introduced and assigned as Arkonis' mentor for his year of study at the academy. Ghen was impressed with Arkonis' eagerness to learn as well as his natural ability to grasp the cunning and shrewd side of politics. It was Ghen, who taught Arkonis how to use his contacts in the underworld to further the Imperial cause. Ghen made the legends of the Empire larger than life, hypnotizing Arkonis with the achievements of such figures as Piett and Thomas Cherokee. He explained how once an agent of the Empire, you could earn glory that would be recognized for generations to come and make true impactful change to the galaxy. This enticement was too much for Arkonis to resist and he plunged himself into his studies, graduating the top of his class, and eventually being recruited into the Imperial Academy on Prakith; a proud day for his father, whose health had been slowly declining over the previous year.
Old Habits Die Hard
Once on Prakith, Arkonis showed promise by gaining excellent scores on his exams, entering into the top 5% of his class. However, progress would stop abruptly. During a night stroll after a long lesson on Galactic Trade Policy, Arkonis stumbled upon a fight that had broken out between two local citizens. Eager to prove his worth, he stepped in to break up the fight. The older man was easily thrown to the ground but the younger had something to prove. Arkonis eventually subdued him, but not before taking a hard right hook to the face. The young man thinking he struck an Imperial officer, a crime punishable by death, dashed away, vanishing into the night. The old man, a rugged Corellian, with a head full of white hair seemed more impressed than scared. Without hesitation and to Arkonis' disbelief, he propositioned for help on a small arms run to Coruscant with the promise of a 50/50 split. The old man knew he was taking a chance with a future Imperial officer, but believed Arkonis to be more than meets the eye. Arkonis had two days before his second volume of training and was hard pressed to refuse the opportunity for a few extra credits in his pocket and the promise of excitement.
G9 Rigger-Class Freighter |
Arkonis returned to his barracks and lie awake most of the night, torn between Imperial duty and his old desires from his days on the lower levels of the city. The Corellian had told Arkonis when he planned to depart and insured him the offer would still stand should he decide to take it. Come sunrise, Arkonis' bed was empty and he was on his way to the spaceport. Luckily, he hadn't been on Prakith long enough for anyone to recognize him.
The old Corellian extended his hand at Arkonis' approach, motioning toward his ship, a rundown G9 Rigger-Class freighter, resembling a heap of rust and mold, but somehow holding together. The old man assured him of its reliability and they were soon on their way. A simple job, deliver two containers of arms to a designated docking bay on Coruscant, get paid, and go home. The papers and documents were already in order if local Imperial authorities intervened. The old man needed a negotiator and that's where Arkonis was to come into play. The old man couldn't be seen on Coruscant and had to do all his trading through a middle man. Of course, as expected, nothing went as planned. The two made it safely to the docking bay, but the contact was nowhere to be seen. The old man insisted they wait longer, but Arkonis was smart enough to know something was wrong. They took off, but Arkonis' fears about the ship came true. The engine nearly erupted into flames from an electrical fire. The freighter plummeted into the lower levels of the city, crashing hard into the side of a cantina, chunks of metal and debris flung in every direction. Luckily, Arkonis escaped the ship just before the explosion. The old man was not so lucky.
The Moment of Truth
Imperial Prison Station |
Stranded on Coruscant's low levels, technically AWOL, and standing in front of the ruins of a smugglers ship, Arkonis knew he might not be able to talk his way out of this one. A menacing and skeletal looking Pau'an came rushing from the side of the cantina, waving a staff and cursing violently. Arkonis dashed away just as three Twi'lek thugs hurled toward him. His years of running from local authorities on Corulag had kept him in ample shape. He dodged in and out of corridors, eventually losing the the thugs amid the maze of buildings. Tired, bleeding, and ashamed, Arkonis understood his failed responsibility and decided to take his chances with the Imperial authorities. He hoped his father would be able to help him with the use his influence, so he found the nearest Imperial checkpoint and turned himself in.
Arkonis was detained and interrogated by ISB agents. An urgent message was sent to Janu Deadrorian on Corulag. Arkonis remained hopeful his father would still see worth in his son. However, hope was met with grave news. His father had passed and his assets were confiscated by the regional governor. Arkonis was left to face his punishment alone. He was stripped of everything and put on an Imperial prison ship by Angelus Devaron and sent away. Arkonis received a correspondence in prison some months later from his former mentor at the Academy, Ghen Thorne. Though disappointed, Ghen knew the potential inside Arkonis and fought to get him released from prison.
Nine months passed, teaching Arkonis the valuable lesson of Imperial order. The solitary darkness of his cell, the strict treatment of its inmates and the sheer lack of individual freedom nearly drove him mad, but opened his eyes to the importance of its functionality. He survived by pulling from all of his life lessons; his father's teachings, the streets of Corulag, and Ghen's devotion and knowledge of the Imperial Code. Ghen had become a regular confidant for Arkonis throughout his time in prison. He shared correspondence and continued to fight for his release on the outside. Two weeks after Ghen's last message, Arkonis was to be released and reinstated in the Imperial Academy. He would get one last shot and he vowed he would not waste it.
Arkonis was shuttled back to Prakith after his release by Angelus Devaron where he was given a new instructor Jano Baskardi. Only time would tell if Arkonis would be the success his father always believed him to be. Arkonis would learn to choose just how far his ambitions would take him and hopefully rise further than he could have ever imagined.
A Short Lived Promise
Imperial Rear Echelon Ship Quarters |
After graduating from the Academy on Prakith, Arkonis was assigned to the Kuat Sector under Azhrarn Amaratha as a moderator for the Imperial Archives, charged with updating the information on several of the planets. Arkonis found solitude in the research performed and was quickly awarded commendations for his work. He formed a trusting relationship with his newfound mentor, but old habits die hard. His taste for days in the underbelly of Corulag never left and Arkonis soon found himself back at the sabacc tables, often drinking himself into a stupor. On multiple occasions Azhrarn as well as Jai Meridan sat him down and tried to talk sense into him. Elaine von Veritrax who he had befriended and formed a close bond with during his early days even tried to steer him away from his path. They all saw his potential, but his penchant for getting into trouble outweighed his responsibility to his duties within the Empire.
One evening after a long day at the Imperial Archives, Azhrarn stopped by to check in on Arkonis, only to find him drunken and bloodied from a street brawl. He somehow, in his inebriated state, found his way to his office at the Archives and passed out. This was a breach of security and unbefitting an Imperial officer. Azhrarn was gravely disappointed and he knew what he had to do. Arkonis was removed from his position and transferred to serve in a rear echelon assignment aboard an Imperial Prison Ship. He was stripped of his lofty positions and resolved to duties typically granted to officers with poor exam scores. He was transported to a prison frigate in a classified part of Imperial space where he was to be kept under close observation until further review.
The reviews came and went and Arkonis found himself full of anger and hatred at himself, his habits, his dead father and sometimes the Empire. He brawled with other prisoners, often getting overwhelmed and then spending weeks in a medical ward from broken ribs, bruised kidneys, and stab wounds from homemade weapons. Arkonis' rage was encouraged by the guards and other prisoners aboard the ship, blinding him to any chances of leaving. For four years, Arkonis kept a routine of exercise, study and violence until an individual who would change his life.
The Civil War
Arkonis on work detail |
In his fourth year aboard the Imperial prison ship, it was obvious that Arkonis was stuck in a perpetual state of hopelessness. He had few allies among the other prisoners and even fewer among the guards. His constant temper and violent outbreaks made him many enemies. His years of conflict hardened his physique and his constant study sharpened his brain. He was becoming dangerous. Most prisoners steered clear of him. Only the newer ones looking to prove themselves made any effort to engage in direct conflict with him. Despite his anger and rage, his intelligence did not go unnoticed.
His wits allowed him to help with research projects aboard the prison ship. He worked with the warden directly on multiple occasions organizing their outdated systems and often developing new methods for processing prisoners and gathering data. This allowed him to observe and stay current on the Galactic Civil War that was being fought across the galaxy. He was even, as part of a work detail, put on assignment hacking into New Republic resource management systems in an attempt to gather information and disrupt supply chain to further cripple the fledgling Republic. Though a prisoner, he was still awarded an Imperial Victory Medal for his service to the Empire after the collapse and surrender of the New Republic. A proud moment for Arkonis, who thought back to his short lived time within the Regional Government. Deep inside he wanted to change and prosper, but he had spent so long pushing everyone away that he didn't know how. It was the start of a shift within him, but the ultimate shift, would come from an old colleague.
The Inspection
Director Elaine von Veritrax |
During his fifth year, a surprise was announced one early morning to all Imperial prisoners. A representative from Imperial Intelligence was enroute to do a formal inspection of the facility. So to prepare, all prisoners were put immediately to work, ensuring the facility would be squeaky clean and highly organized. Who that representative was, would change the trajectory of Arkonis' last year aboard the prison ship forever.
Normally his duties were to run ops on many of the computer systems and droids servicing the countless small mainframes that dotted the ship. He'd spend a year working through them all only to start all over again by the time he finished just to keep up with the need for new updates. He was about to leave his tiny bunk when a security officer surprised him at his door. He ordered Arkonis to follow him, constantly insisting he keep up with his hurried pace, but wouldn't divulge any information on their need to hurry. Arkonis was soon led down many corridors into a small room where a familiar face was waiting for him. The figure of Director Elaine von Veritrax stood unmoving beside a small table. She motioned him to sit an invitation Arkonis didn't hesitate on. Arkonis and Director Veritrax joined the Imperial ranks around the same time, but obviously the two had completely different paths.
The two shared an old camaraderie, which didn't seem to have deteriorated despite their long years apart. Director Veritrax quickly cut to the chase. It was no coincidence that she was the one to visit this particular imperial ship on the edges of Galactic space. She always believed Arkonis could be a better version of himself and encouraged him to give the academy and his career in the Empire one more shot. Arkonis was floored. He never thought in a million years that the Director of Imperial Intelligence would be standing in front of him, giving him a ticket to redemption and he didn't hesitate to take it.
The Final Return
Imperial Academy Classroom |
Arkonis was released from his duties in the rear echelon and returned to the Academy for his refresher course. Looking around at all the younger recruits made him appreciate his time aboard the prison ship. He knew his experiences would push him farther than the fresh faced classmates that surrounded him. He studied hard and pulled through with the help of his training officer, Nuramon Umra. He did so well that the second portion of the academy testing was waived. This encouragement bolstered his belief that he could change his life for the better and finally serve the Empire he had dreamed of serving.
He was soon assigned to the Emerald Region where he would begin his duties alongside Governor Icarus Carinae and even working personally for Grand Moff Thea Corine on a special project. He was awarded for his contributions and only a month into his active duty, he was promoted to Senior Superintendent. His knowledge of history would eventually gain the eye of Minister Leeanna Mailhot who would recruit him into being a writer for the INB under General Isolder von Alard. He spent countless hours in the Imperial Archives pouring over raw data, historical data and outdated information. He was able to update and piece together important historical events and stories from across the Amber Region, more specifically the Kuat Oversector. He would later be honored with the Imperial Literacy Award for his efforts.
Arkonis continues to keep his head down and his work close. He's only just begun to show his true abilities as an Imperial Officer of the Galactic Empire.
